Shanaze Reade is a celebrated British athlete best known for her extraordinary career in BMX racing and track cycling. As a former Olympic and World Champion, she’s left a massive mark on the world of sports, achieving three UCI BMX World Championships, and being the only athlete to clinch gold medals in both BMX and track cycling in the same year, alongside Victoria Pendleton in 2007 and 2008.
Beyond this, Shanaze has ventured into the world of television, appearing on hit shows like Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins on Channel 4, Unbreakable on BBC One, A League of Their Own, A Question of Sport and Celebrity Pointless.
She has also done a number of presenting roles for the Olympics, one being presenting alongside Adel Roberts on the BBC for the World Championships, as well as commentating on the Olympic Channel for 2 years on the BMX World Cup Series. Shanaze also presented a documentary for the Olympic Channel where she followed a young boy’s journey from coming out of a gang, to getting into BMX-ing.
Shanaze has also done various charity projects, she’s served as the ‘Diversity and Young Persons’ ambassador for Nicola Sturgeon and as a ‘Cycling and Walking’ ambassador for the West Midlands, collaborating closely with prominent figures such as Mayor Andy Burnham and Chris Boardman. She also has a longstanding ambassadorship with Access Sport, where she passionately coaches preschoolers and hosts charity events.
Huge companies haven’t failed to recognise this, as over the years Shanaze has worked as an ambassador for brands including Skarpa, HSBC, Cupra, Red Bull, Sweaty Betty, BMW, Cadbury, Sky, and Visa.
Her remarkable achievements also include being named the Sunday Times Young Sportswoman of the Year in 2007, achieving two Guinness World Records - one for breaking the speed limit while riding a bike on the wall of death, and another for the most gold medals attained by an individual in BMX. . She also proudly has a BMX track named in her honour in Crewe, Cheshire.
